UTOPIA RESEARCH

Project dedicated to the THEREMIN music, analog synthesizers as MOOG instruments, and new music toys as the lovely TENORI-ON by Yamaha.

It is a music-art project where ErMan translates his artistic influences in music.

Warming Signs

Released Nov. 15th, 2009

All the tracks are inspired by a vision: a new world (“Green Pollution”), drived by a new way of life (“Eco Logic Brain”), “searching for a New abitat”, where ecocities (“Sustainable City”) are full of “Vertical Gardens” and wind powered cars (“Wind Cars on the Highway”).

concept

“Warming Signs” arises from an idea of the Italian musician ErMan to experiment new musical forms using new electronic music devices.
His principal interest is the relationship between Music and Technology.

His work as sound designer is behind projects where vintage, modern electronics and sound engineering became the ideal match to experiment new sounds in pop field and in experimental field.

The instruments Tenori-on (Yamaha), and Korg DS-10 (Nintendo DS) are at the center among the instruments experimented in Warming Signs.

Warming Signs introduce the listener to an electronic world where new mobile-technologies follow a new code, transforming the artist’s way of communicate his own art.

Warming Signs is a pun, where “warning signals” become a conceptual metaphor of the global warming problem: that is precisely: “warming signs”.

Musically speaking, Warming Signs use the immediacy of new media (smart-music-devices, smart-technologies) and bring the listener to an obsessive world (techno, trance, ambient,  analog synth sound,  experimental, pop), with the awareness of the urgent ecological problem
(“Point of no return”), but with the dream to see modern urban cities invaded by thousands of flowers (“A Thousand Flowers In Bloom”).

Utopia? This is the project by ErMan: Utopia Research.
And Warming Signs is his obsession.

Special guests in Warming Signs: Rural War Room, conducted by two experimental American artist/musicians Donavan Suitt & Byron Werner (Little Rock, USA), and the artist Theramina (USA).

Tenori-On

Tenori-On (Yamaha).

Created by the media artist Toshio Iwai, Yamaha defines Tenori-ON as “the new digital musical instrument for the 21st century”. A 16x16 matrix of LED switches allows the artists to play music intuitively, creating a "visible music" interface. A completely new concept of playing and composing music in a portable device.

Music Toys

The KORG DS-10, a micro-synth on Nintendo DS platform with all the original sound of Korg MS-10 (1975).  A real micro-synth, not a game.

The Casio-Tone (mini-keyboard and calculator from 1980’s), the Stylophone (the first little monophonic synth from 1960’s; well-known because it was played on Space Oddity by David Bowie) are only two among many music toys revaluate today because of their high level of technology that they have.

Virtual Instruments

Virtual instruments (laptop music).

The ideal type of music instruments for modern artists.

Complete electronic instrumentation in a box that travels with the musician/producer. The perfect instrument for sound designers.

Theremin

Etherwave® Pro Theremin (Moog Music).

Professional Theremin of the Etherwave series by Moog Music.

The invisible waves of this instrument bring the artist and the spectator together on a level of perception that seems impalpable but tangible.
